Re: This is so true!

I suppose we have been so  influenced  by our upbringing that we believe the clothing represents the behaviour. That is no more true than saying an attractive cover indicates a good book. Thanks for sharing  you, and your friends',  experiences.

This is so true!
I was telling a couple of friends a story today:

Many years ago, my best friend and I went into a very upscale, nationally known, store right after leaving the beach.  We were dressed in beach clothing (i.e. beat-up shirt, shorts, "flip-flops").  Our hair was messy from both swimming in the ocean and from the winds.  We wanted to see how we were treated.

Basically, after entering the store without a greeting from anyone, one of the store employees followed us around the store, periodically asking us if we needed any help.

About a month later, we did our experiment again, only this time we were dressed in casual, but very becoming clothes.  When we entered we were greeted with a very polite "Welcome to ........ if there is anything we can help you with, please let us know."

Then we were able to walk around the store without being followed and without being asked all the time whether we needed any help.

The jerks!

Strange!!
Ex Turpi: I agree with your observations.  My opinion is this: What is inside of a person's heart and soul is much more important than their garb.  Unfortunately, most people don't agree with this.  Appearance is much more important to them.  If you're good looking and well-dressed, you must be a good or great person.  In some cases, yes!  In all cases, no!

Re: Very True Indeed!

Sira:

You are right in your implications. Perhaps the response is not so strange at all.

Very True Indeed!

Do the clothes make the man, or does the man make himself, based on the clothes?

Personally, I feel more confident and "in charge" when I'm dressed in a smart looking business suit or skirt. Maybe that self image comes out in the way I carry myself, and people pick up on that rather than the clothes themselves?

To all you guys:

This comes from experience. I walk down the street in my suit, most people greet me as if I am important and erudite. Walk home, put on a jeans and an old cap, the very same persons pass me without noticing. Even though I greet them the same way. Thanks for commenting.
