I hope she had good reason for missing. There are many disappointments in life. If he is just now turning 40, I'm sure he will have many more before its all over. I hope he will focus on those who attended to help him celebrate.

Hey LLL, I can feel SIL's pain.
I have a similar mother. it's hard to accept that mothers are capable of abandoning their children, but the sad fact is that they are, and it hurts no matter how old you are. SIL is very lucky to have you all in his life, and I'm sure despite his pain and sadness, is VERY appreciative of all of you!
