Revolution's not a bad thing, Antonio
If it's for a good cause.  Sleep well.

Guy was in effect planning a revolution.

He failed but was a hero to many. Other revolutions have since succeeded, of course.

I'm off to bed now - sleep tight!

More than valid, Antonio, it was the truth.

But if the King's men say he was a conspirator, and arrest him and there's no appeal, because it's the King and no contradicts the King, then what are you going to do?

This is why revolutions happen.

True, Pat! Let's hope good comes out of it.

That's true, and their view was equally valid, no doubt.

I've heard about Guy Fawkes day "forever" but never knew the
story -- always thought it was some hero of renown. Thanks for the sonnet and the addition to my faulty education. Nice to see our friend. I hope he decided to write a novel during November -- he's certainly got the material for a soap opera based on an online website...

Well, the friends of Guy certainly knew what kind of guy he was

He was an alleged conspirator.
As I say, it really depends whose side you're on what you believe. History is written by the winners. He was caught and convicted and that's the story we are told. Maybe he was framed. Can we ever be sure whether events have been fair or unkind? He was an enemy of the powers that be, and if the powers that be decide someone's fate, there is nothing the little people can do about it. At least, when there is a lack of democracy and secret plotting afoot.

Weird, huh?

Thanks for spelling it out for me.  So, was he a conspirator, or was he framed? is that the question of the ages?

I suppose that's why you say he might be a fall guy.

Did this guy look something like the guy in your post? And did he make acking noises? Maybe even say something about jackdaws?

Really? I met someone you might know. Coincidences?!!!!

Hi Antonio, so Guy was burned in effigy for supposedly plotting to blow up

Parliament?  And now you have holiday to celebrate catchiing him on November 5 (which is the day before my birthday)? Interesting. We only blow things up on the day we declared our Independence from you guys.  But it's the same effect, kids get hurt, houses catch fire.

That is frustrating about the email, but I did get one from some other guy you know.

PS: I still can't email out from home, sadly.
I may be able to tomorrow at work, though, and I'll try and get the problem fixed as soon as I can.

Hi Zena

Sorry, I didn't realise it wasn't known over there. Guy Fawkes was the plotter who allegedly, along with others in his gang, tried to blow up the House of Parliament when King James and all the politicians were present, in 1605 or thereabouts. They were believed to be Catholic conspirators. The main significance today is that we build bonfires on the anniversary of this event - November 5th - and put a 'guy' on the bonfire, to celebrate the authorities catching him in the nick of time before he blew up all the gunpowder in the cellars underneath the Houses of Parliament. He was then of course condemned as a devil and his effigy is burnt to this day on bonfires all over the country, while fireworks displays are widespread around this time of year in the weeks leading up to November 5th and especially at the weekend nearest to that date.

Sorry!
