Those last guys you speak of are predatory and nomadicly
territorial. They like conquering other territory but not necessarily to settle, wandering on to the next "conquest." They look for the weak ones to prey upon -- the lonely, the ignored, the abused, the unloved -- get what they want from them and move on.
