gatekeeping

I have to agree with both Harvey and beachbelle.

The gatekeeping theory of news not only held sway (for hierarchical rasons) in the days preceding the Internet; it helped -- or, at least endeavored, to filter news and ideas down to the more salient and verifiable.

Sometimes I wonder if technology itself is shredding the Bill of Rights -- free speech, in particular. Communication technology facilitates the dissemination of ideas at a rate too fast to regulate with truth or objectivity.

After all, what good is free speech without discernment. The everyday person is not effectively equipped to filter these things on his or her own. Thus, the average person trusts inordinately -- or even has to trust, begrudgingly.

The great disadvantage

for the readers of blogs is that so much of what they read is hearsay, gossip, inaccurate, or lies.  These hazards exist in other media, true, but there are editors and editorial committees to screen the material and researchers to check facts and hold writers accountable.  That doesn't exist on the Internet, which should hold bloggers to an even higher standard, but unfortunately there are many who take it as license.  Readers beware!
