Re: le_divorcee
Now that you say it, I think so too. But I'll keep reading Dante because he has a fun way of telling stories.

Re: brian76
I feel the same. Too intricate. If you as a reader don't want to be mindwhammied by his writing then it's ok LOL.

Re: .Dave.
Wow. The original from 1922?  You have such a treasure.

Re: richinstore
I'm sure you'll love it. It has plenty of those references and it's pretty easy to get, really.

Re: TAPS
I actually think that was the teacher's way to get me off.

sorry to hear you're going through hell!!! .... never read Dante's book ~ whatever's the reason behind your teacher's proposal, don't let it discourage you one bit!!!!!!!!!! .... Teachers can be wrong too! .... you'll probably grow up to be a better writer than her!

Then whoever has read those books should automatically become a good writer
it sounds like a matter of opinion...

well
Don't take too seriously this advices. If you ask another teacher he/she will probably tell two different books as basic. As myself I read only about 20 pages of Ulysses and I felt that this book was not written for me. Then I read some of Finnigan's Wake and I'm quite sure the Joyce not the writer for me.

"I'm still in hell"

Funny statement.

I'd like to read both too. I got hold of the 1922 text of Ulysses recently. Gawd knows how it differs, but that's the one sitting on my shelf. Just need a couple of spare months...

I guess that I'll never be a really good writer because I have not read them en toto and do not intend to.
