Agents know their way around a world that you, essentaily dont. Yes it's expensive, but a REPUTABLE agent will take their pay out of the profit they sell your novel for, so an experienced agent will not only be motivated to get you as much as possible, but they know people that you haven't met yet. Just make sure you do some research on how to find a reputable agent. First of all a reputable agent will not charge you a reading fee. Writers.com I think is a really good source.

After years of submissions, I've decided to do without both agent or publisher for the foreseeable future and go it alone.
