Podhoretz is a moron. His views on the Bush legacy prove it. However,

the war against Islamic extremism will never end, and thinking it will end in 35 years is nonsense.  Mitt Romney proves he's as asinine as Bush with his pal-ing around with those Christian contract murderers, Blackwater.  And you are point on about why most Middle Easterners hate us.  Occupiers and infidels, blasphemers trodding sacred land.

We would do well here to promote a more conciliatory foreign policy than has been implemented of late.  We need to withdraw from Iraq, regroup, prepare.  We need to be more aggressive with the Chinese, less so with the Russians.  Israel will take care of Iran.  But the most dangerous countries are Saudi Arabia and Egypt, where the people are extremely fundamentalist in their views and the government isn't in good standing.  The House of Saud and the government in Egypt will both probably be deposed by extremists within the next two decades.

Hegemony?  We'd better develop those alternative sources of energy quick...

Wavy Davy
This is another good post. I see them all as a group of self centered people who want power for themselves and know the way to that is by votes. They would sell out this country in a heartbeat for votes if they thought it would be the case. I don't see the Arab hatred the way you do but that is not going to repair anything. Good post, thanks for the information.

WavyDavy:

There is the law of physics which calculates that there is an equally strong reaction to any  action. China grows in military power every day. They have the manpower to have a continuing larger military than the US. Russia is getting stronger and more aggressive. Realism suggests the US position is not sustainable.

I am beginning to feel the prognostications you cite about the Iraq war is correct. Yet have you read the overtures Iraq has just made to China and Iran?
