As I Understand it, unless there is an emergency situation the President needs the authority of Congress to go to war. It is quite improbable he will get such authorization.

WLee55: I agree with your analysis of the situation with Iran. War with them would be worse for the United States than our present day fiasco in Iraq. When will we ever learn?
