It was probably for the best.

Newt Gingrich is 64, guys, being born in 1943. As to whether he made the
right decision or not, well... that depends on the perspective.  Although Gingrich's academic and literary laurels continue to amass, his political posturing and throwback viewpoint are rooted firmly in a glorified past he knows well but has only tangential place in today's global and multinational arena.  From his perspective, I'm sure he believes that he could be the greatest president ever, much like most of the other men who have held the office (megalomania is the common denominator).  Regardless, he would make the race interesting, especially in the Republican primaries.  And I am beginning to hope for just about anybody to oust Giuliani from the top spot in the polls (except Romney, who is simply an idiot with money).  Even an old throwback like Newt, who has likeable qualities, would be preferable to a self-glorifying braggart and liar like Giuliani.

Ex Turpi: I believe that Newt is around 60 years old.  Maybe his opportunity has passed him by.  It depends on what happens politically and the relevance of his foundation.  Those two factors will determine his political future.  It was a tough decision for him to make but you don't always get another chance to run for president.  You can begin working at a political think tank anytime.  Why not do something like that after the presidency or if you don't attain the office?

WavyDavy:

I admire Newt for his scholarship and that he is very articulate. I think he would have contributed much to the debates. I do not know how old he is; but it depends on who the next President is and how  popular he/she is after the first term.

I think most people who taste power are loathe to leave it. If the right opportunity presents itself, Newt may yet run.
