The ease or difficulty of admitting mistakes depends on the situation and magnitude. If it's an "honest" mistake such as a typo, forgetting to carry the one, or some other bit of carelessness, it shouldn't be a big deal. However, if the mistake or error involves something we deeply care about, something we strongly identify with or it involves something by which we define ourselves, the "price of admission" is astronomically high. We like to think there's nothing wrong with being wrong, but more often than not, it really is. The subsequent embarrassment/humiliation of a full confession is what most find difficult to face. Though I'm wrong more times than I care to admit, I will fess up when presented with compelling evidence.
