Lady, what defines a great song to me is what I listen to:
someone who sinks their soul into their song, has their own voice, and tells it like it is, whether that makes the listener uncomfortable or not: PJ Harvey, Tori Amos, Three Days Grace, Metallica, Nine Inch Nails, and some of the softer stuff when depending on my mood:
Diana Krall, Norah Jones, Latin salsa, etc.

Maria von Trapp ponders this question. (Read the book--it's better than the movie)
She had spent her teens wandering hills and singing folksongs--before she checked into becoming a nun.
I think to find true enduring songs you have to go to the folksongs-the simple songs mothers sing to their children, which alas, are fading because all too often we have a radio or tv on to fill the silence.

lady.........
The music of past eras builds my soul. That of the present, tears it down!
