I can't have a dog where I live, but I wish I could. I'd have taken those poor animals in in a heartbeat! How anyone can treat innocent, defenseless creatures like that is simply beyond me.

you win. You struck a nerve and he knows you're right or he'd say something else besides what he said. Sometimes you get a lot of crap for making a good point, but if you're right, let him cuss. He only looks like an inhumane jerk who shouldn't own dogs, and you just look like an intelligent person pointing out the obvious.
Many clerks won't take side when customers argue with each other. It's the protocol of the job. It's why I got fired a few times. Take care
