dave--
you are 100% correct. And that some here have taken it to the personal level with their character assassinations of me...well...I never went there and I never will, because that is just not who I am.

Hi Julia. Plagiarism is theft. Mary included, agreement is strong on that point. My feeling is that you like Mary and you care for her. I like her and care for her and send her my best wishes in dealing with her alcoholism and depression which she has so candidly been writing about.

I think your passion in recent posts actually stems from anger at the Blogit Code of Conduct & Terms of Use. You feel that the measures they take are not a match for the severity of the transgression. I've felt this in the past on different matters.

The frustration I find with the Blogit ethos is that if you do notify them of perceived transgressions, they always keep the judgement as a private matter. The only person to find out what they think is the transgressor, not the complainant. This is how they choose to operate and, grudgingly at times, I've come to accept it.

On the topic of plagiarism and its punishment, I don't agree with zero tolerance (on Blogit, that is) but would rather see a stepped approach. Whilst we do have professional writers here, I think most of us are learning to be writers and to have a graded approach to punishments on such matters helps us to learn. If we can can learn it here that plagiarism would finish us in the professional world of writing, then Blogit has done us some good.

In summary, I don't think you're writing about Mary, you're writing about plagiarism. What you're angry about is Blogit's treatment of plagiarism, not Blogit's treatment of Mary.

Julia, I guess it depends on the person/people behind the rules?
Some take it seriously, some do not.

wow, so good to see you! I hope all is well. yes, don't even think of plagiarizing in school, or you will pay dearly. But as I have been reminded by some bloggers here, Blogit is not real life and therefore, real rules do not apply!!

well said.  I definitely agree.  and you're right about the academic suicide thing.  I am about to take the honor pledge in college and have heard the consequences are very severe for plagairism.  not only will I forfeit my enrollment, but destroy any chance of being accepted at another institution or even getting a job writing or editing...not something I'm prepared to do!
