I don't know if they were any kinder, notapoet, but I do know that a lot of

the stuff Babe Ruth pulled was more socially acceptable, like drinking and carousing.  Societies have always held up men of letters, men of politics, artists and athletes above the rest, indulgently allowed them to get away with marginal activities.  The difference with Vick is that he chose not only to do something illegal, but something that goes against our current social grain -- being cruel to animals for sport.

And I think you're point on about the attitudes of the pampered primadonnas...

Vick is just the latest example of a poor, pampered, overpaid athlete
who has grown up thinking the rules don't apply to him because of his talent and his paycheck.  Sad to say, it's nothing new.  Look at rule-breaking, hard drinking, carouser Babe Ruth who was beloved by fans and awarded a salary larger than that of the President of the United States for his his ability to swing a bat, despite all of his off field antics.  Fortunately for Ruth, the press was much kinder to bad boy athletes back in them thar good ol' days.
