Gorsh, I'm going way back...this is confusing; others see people actively
working as a way to manipulate; you mean brown-nosing? I work hard like this because I'm trying to get kudos or points from whoever is watching? Wow! I guess I can see someone feeling that way. I've always been a workaholic, even in the public and private sector, I was never trying to earn anything extra; as a matter of fact, I was taken advantage of quite a bit because of my work ethic and unable to ask for what I truly deserved. Personally, Jesus Christ has been with me since a child and no matter what I'm doing, I'm trying to impress him ONLY. He is the only one I've ever sought Kudos or brownie points from. I was also taught when paid by the hour, you work for the hour....so I've never known any different. I always considered doing personal things when I'm on a time clock as theivery, or stealing someone's money if i wasn't earning it. But I can truly see others who may see hard work as a means of manipulating; only if they're only working hard when someone is watching or will oversee their work, not when only being accountable to oneself.

It has always been the lot of the active to be manipulated by the
opportunistic, Straightforward.  It is the essence of power (that and a bigger, better weapon)...

And I see that as a good thing. LOL
life would be so uninteresting if we all saw everything in the same way
