love the Irish

How can we not love the Irish. It's the ancestral "old sod" for many of us! The "accent" rings sounds of homeland to our very cells.

CringetheUSA
Girl. Welcome to the USA. You brought tears to my eyes. My beautiful grandmother was Irish, not born in Ireland but her parents were. I know they must have said such. She was so beautiful and such a gracious person, kind to everybody. I loved her dearly. Enjoy it and make everyday a blessing. Congrats on your job.

Hi Cringe - good to hear things are going so well.
So someone's got to live in New Jersey. You gotta get a foothold, I suppose. And it's close to NYC, which automatically makes it better than... somewhere a long way from anywhere ... don't want to offend anyone. Each to their own. Sounds great from what you've said. I had similar experiences with my accent when i was over there. they are generally very welcoming to visitors aren't they. You'll efinitely have a honeymoon period that'll last as long as your accent, so don't lose it!

Glad to hear things are going well!

You will undoubtedly find the U.S. to be a whole lot different from what you expect. I see Nautikos thinks I would fit in on the Sopranos since I spent many a meal at Holstein's now made famous and forever changed completely due to that show. Don't bother going there. It's a long wait I hear and the place reeks like onion rings now - an item that in reality no one ordered, if it was on the menu.

Unfortunately, you are in the part of Jersey I would never move to... I live in one of those green, horsey, type of counties in central NJ.

I enjoy hearing your impressions of NJ/the USA/ the people. Well, until you start  meeting the folks that everyone else hates, too.

Be careful driving! (Too many people and horrid driving conditions top my list of why I would not live there...)

Maybe one of these days we will get together with Gypsy...like after school starts...I am hoping that I may have a life outside of this house then when both kids are in school ALL DAY! I am going to be soooo disappointed if it does not work out that way!

Great to see you are settling in. I hear that several pubs in Cork have gone out of business though.

Slather the sunscreen on kids. I've been reading that the damage the sun
does to skin is irreversible and usually occurs before the age of 18.  It is, however, underneath the surface where potential cancer generates itself, and is therefore invisible.  Don't let anybody get a nasty burn, which is far easier to acquire than anyone can imagine....

Naut, I have to say, NJ is probably the opposite of where I'd want to live
permanently.  But, to be fair, I haven't seen a lot of it.  I know that Sussex county has lovely countrified areas that I would love.

Having said all that, where I'm at now is a lovely neighbourhood.  I'm 40 mins by train from NYC.  New York city was a place I never expected to like, but I do, in a sort of submissive respect.

You can't help but be awed by a place that is the architectural, cultural, and social manifestation/equivalent of some self-recharging battery.  It's got the energy hum of some unseen engine.  You can't help but admire it, stand by and observe, or take part and be swept up.  Call it modern magic maybe.

As for me, it seems the whole world is contriving to give me an ordinary life, I'm still fighting it, but can live with it given the infrastructure to dream.

Thanks for the heads up on Vonage Offy & Corbin, I dunno what Alex has
signed us up to but it's a 3 for one deal, internet, phone and cable.  He's been like a force of nature since we landed, every day I dread the zombified gap between my first coffee and the second when he inevitably bugs the crap out of me with his monologue on that day's plan/schedule.

We're still at our in-law's condo right now, we sorted out their DSL for them so I'm using the eMac we brought across the Atlantic on the plane for them.

I think that's wonderful for you and your family
Of course like Naut I don't tend to put NJ up in the ranks of places I want to go. FactorFiction has a blog called New Jersey Debunked and it definitely shows the good side of the state. Congrats on your new home and job...Oh and I am like Corbin...Vontage 21.00 per month..

Cringe.....
Do you have DSL???  If so, I saw where you can call Ireland for free if you use the VOIP phone system....Vonage  $24.95/mo.......

I'm like Pat, for me New Jersey is rust belt and, if not the Sopranos, at least people like the Sopranos. But I'm glad you're having a good time and are meeting good people! And with you there, the neighborhood has definitely improved...

Pat B, think I left a few comments in the past trying to update you as to
the change of venue, but I know how these things get lost in the quagmire of posts & comments.

I knew you'd like it here! I knew we''d love you here!
Maybe my memory's failed, but I thought y'all were headed for Ohio? And now you're settling in to New Jersey.  I've wanted to see that state since I met a family from there as they were seeking directions here in Quiet Town...  It can't all be factories and The Sopranos. I seem to remember there's a shoreline, a boardwalk in Atlantic City. And now I hear about kind hearted individuals and things going well for The Irish!  Woo! Hoo!
