Good stuff, Tony, particularly working within such a challenging rhyme scheme today.

I like to think that grand Lion has shown his dignity during his days and now has nothing to prove to anyone. He is the King of Beasts. ~Peace, OTA

Hi Pelagus - many thanks! Pride may remain but power is more short-lived
as it depends on strength.

beautiful story
i just think we have the importance we give to ourselves. Yes, pride is makes us fall at some point, for we never can keep the importance we once gave to ourselves.

Hello Durbs - thanks a lot mate!
The inspiration was the old quarter of the French city of Lyon - or Lyons as it's sometimes spelled! I have seen lions now and then in England - but safely behind fences!

posted by Antonionioni on July 29, 2007 at 3:55 PM | link to this | reply

Thanks Proc - sorry to hear it's been on your mind.
It hasn't been on mine any more than  normal...! I just decided to do a poem about an old lion! This was because my daughter is staying with a family in France, and visited Vieux Lyon - 'Old Lyon' - the old part of the city of Lyon. That inspired me to this!!

I think your sonnnets are so accesible, as I repeat myself, they are everyday topics not love or the Milton-Donne-Rilke religious sonnets. But delicious from the Italian chef's sonny sonnet menu. shalom and GOD EVENING/ thanks for reading durbs

Hi Notapoet - many thanks, mate - yes, I don't know how accurate this is
but I suspect the end isn't especially an enjoyable time particularly in hierarchical societies in the animal kingdom. And the ways of animals are often surprisingly similar to our own...

The real lion king,
and the real sad fate, not Disney's happy ending, that faces him in the wild.  Sad, but true -- and another good one under your belt.

Antonio-yo-yo - I noticed I spelled your name wrong again.
Oops!  Love this.  The colours are a really nice touch.  The language, the rhymes, the play on words, all of it well done!  I'll master this someday!
