John Lennon continued a long established tradition of songwriters...... He was not the first, not the last, he was great in his own context, but greatest is surely shared amongst the pioneers..... The jazz, blues, rock n roll greats that found their roots in America, yes america, ....  so many to name.... And yes....we love Elvis...and all the great songwriters who wrote for him...Chuck Berry, too, Let's not forget WHERE it ALL BEGAN!!!

Re: He was one of them. I'm partial to Elvis and Frank as artists. But as

but, you have to admit, Jesus sold a lot of books & on the other hand  while Jesus never

sang about the Beatles , George Harrison did sing about Jesus.....

He was one of them. I'm partial to Elvis and Frank as artists. But as
the total package, John Lennon wasn't only a singer/songwriter, but a man of conscience and social change.  I think he looked a lot like Jesus (with glasses).  He definitely sold more albums than Jesus.  In fact, what is the total?  100 million to 0?  Yeah, definitely a better selling recording artist.

the greatest

interesting views all,  I find it amazing (and strangely comforting) that as long ago as the statement was made about

Jesus this is what so many people remember.

Re: Lennon was a great song writer and had some really good melodies too..

fair enough, all were (are ) great have to say though in all fairness to John, all the above mentioned (except Dylan have actually said on record Lennon was a better songwriter and

while Bob can  write, Morrison could write and sing, Mick can write and sing,  Keith can play

and they can all do a little more--the truth was --Lennon could do it all.

Lennon was a great song writer and had some really good melodies too..
but he wasn't the greatest. I mean where do you start? Dylan, Morrison, Mick n Keith....All I know is this: Dylan was one of the greatest lyricists of all time; Morrison had genius ability to actually write awesome lyrics WITH great structure; Rolling Stones have to be the greatest band of all time because of longevity (sp?). Lennon was a tormented spirit too I belive from the footage I have seen....

I remember that.
I think Lennon was talking in sheer popularity numbers -- I seriously doubt he was comparing himself to Jesus personally.

But the greatest? Too many to name. Morrison, Jim and Van. John Hiatt. Steve Earle. Tommy Malone. And that's just off the top of the head.

Re: Re: Actually he said they were bigger than jesus....
Remember I said he wrote a song recorded b Ringo called "I'm the greatest.  I think it was a bit tongue in cheek.

Re: Isn't he the one that said the Beatles were bigger than God? LOL
yeah, sort of ---I think he realized he'd gone to far with that one.  Interestng sidebar on that....much later he actually called into the 700 show --but hung up because the wait was too  long.

Re: Actually he said they were bigger than jesus....

interesting, I once had a 3 hr conversation with the guy  who wrote "No one here gets out alive."  (One of the two authors that is--also wrote 'wonderland avenue," very enlightening

after all I'd heard to actually talk at length with someone that actually knew him.

Actually he said they were bigger than jesus....
and well, the beatles were more popular than jesus. He didn't mean he thought they were better. John Lennon rocks, but not the greatest. Now Jim Morrison was the greatest.
