Really, a competitive eater with a jaw injury. When I heard about it I thought it sounded so much like one of my short stories!

Hi Julia, hope he recovers. I'll try to see ESPN, though the timing
would be different in India. Thanks for visiting my blog and your believing in reincarnation. We may share your some of your experiences.

Well, he has a few hours yet to recover before the event, so I'm rooting for the little wiener champ, lol.

ROFL!! I spilled my coffee laughing at your comment. Takeru is a beanpole compared to some of the other "athletes" in this "sport"--such that it is, LOL.

I know what you mean; sadly, it's just one example of thousands of ways humans (in general) are exceptionally wasteful creatures.

this is hilarious and sad, all rolled into one. (and I don't mean sad because he can't gorge himself either... :) )

Say it ain't so!
I watched him down the competition at last year's Nathan's open. okay, I was watching it on TV and both disgusted and amused by it. I find it interesting that this 5'10" 160 pound weed could eat three times as many nitrate-cycles with all the bread than those 300 pound behemoths lined up next to him.

A jaw injury, huh? A shame -- a prime career, or is that prime rib career, cut short, or lean, as it were, by a sports injury, such as it is....

Julia...
I saw a thing on him either VH1 or MTV true story and he has a weird stomach thing where it goes below his abdomen muscles and allows for more room. Eww. When I was talking about the waste...they throw up a lot of the food afterward and the left overs get thrown away. I don't know it just seems so sad that so much money gets thrown into such a thing...

Offy--
he is a trim, kinda cute Japanese guy. I remember reading about the prizes for the hot dog eating competition--guess what--the winner gets a gazillion HOT DOGS!! I kid you not...

I wonder if that's the same guy they did an interview with last week where he said he was going for a new record..after 50 plus dogs. I didn't know he hurt his jaw though. I like to watch them do it...I am amazed they can put that much down and still walk away...Wonder what the prizes are?

OTA--LMAO!!
I think Smiley just broke the record! I watched him down dog after dog and he just doesn't show any signs of stopping.

I agree, it is kind of a disgusting display of excess; but they don't really "waste" the food since they eat it all. I can't figure out how most of them remain at normal weight though.

Julia...
I never really thought this was a great sport...especially with so many people actually going hungry and you have people gorging themselves and wasting food. It's kind of disgusting really. Now maybe he can find something worthwhile to do!
