Very good points Kooka.
The more learn about each other, the better the chance of getting along (as long as we aren't trying to force a conversion).

I do it to learn
My favorite exchanges with believers are when they actually want to debate and exchange ideas in an open minded and respectful manner.

I get caught up with believers who instead are trying to convert me or breakdown my beliefs, and that is when it can get nasty.  I will defend my beliefs and my character when there is an obvious and outright attack against them.

In the end I want to learn all I can about religious ideas because that is the only way to really understand people and as a writer understanding people is a very needed thing.

I have no need to prove their beliefs to be wrong, I just wish for a better understanding and that they themselves end up being more open minded and hopefully end up understanding their beliefs better.  if anything it often seem like the believers are the ones who wish to destroy other people's beliefs rather than the non-believers.
