Food for thought !!!

Hi E - I think it's certainly becoming more possible as the west is
more and more in competition with countries on lower wages, meaning that the west manufactures less and less. In Britain we make less things than we used to, including food. It seems the only jobs left are in the financial sector and service industries. So that along with the ageing population is surely going to mean we need more and more taxes but with less and less income to pay for it - not a recipe for wealth is it? The population might not like ever-increasing taxes, but it will have no choice, as far as I can see.

Antonio
Would you not agree that it's possible for a country to tax itself to financial ruin? I seem too remember Sweden, some years back, finally getting fed up with their ludicrously high tax rates...

Hi Madam!! How are you today?

Hi Drohan - no, not always but then we should use the vote against
those who misuse the money from taxes. The idea and principle of taxes remains a good one, a long as it's not used for wars.

Hi En - true, charities are an alternative form of wealth distribution...
But do they cover things like road maintenance, disposal of rubbish, mainstream education and so on. There are so many areas of life to pay for, and many of them are not the kind of things that people would willingly pay for? Thanks - I'll pop over to yours!

Oh yes, Pelagus - taxes are only one small part of the jigsaw.

Hi OTA - well Shakespeare occasionally refers to financial matters too!

Hi Troosha - yes, it is odd about the debt. Could be because we import
so much - and a lot of jobs are governement jobs, including mine, so they're all paid for by taxes, really.

Hi Kabu - yes, it's not a nice feeling to pay it, I agree - but we shouldn'
avoid paying it! Our big tax time of year has just gone, I think. There are some good pubs round here!

Respectful disagreement - there was a recent study in the U.S. - and since I believe in "truth in advertising," I will tell you, that it was a conservative group who conducted the study - it found that people who don't believe in a big government/welfare state, tend to give much more money to charities - than people who do believe in a big gov./welfare state - don't know how up you are on pop culture, but a famous leftist in this country, "Rosie O'Donnell," came right out and admitted that she doesn't give much to charities - her reason - "Hey, that's the government's job - don't get mad at me, get mad at the gov." - what (in my opinion), a CROCK OF LEFT-WING SHIT! Sorry, but I get hot and bothered about these issues - I majored in Pol Sci in college - nothing but far-left professors trying to indoctrinate me - not trying to get me to think! Anyway, I left a comment on your comment, on my most recent, "Untimely Meditations," post.

interesting topic tony
well expressed.

Then the question remains... what's the root of the problem? Taxes are just one piece, tiny & deceased...

nobody likes paying taxes but some of the monies are actually put to good use - like a health care system such as the one you have (as does Canada).  I'm not sure where the rest of it goes....  nor do half the politicians, I suspect.  Gazillions of dollars are collected and yet each country sits with a gazillion dollars of debt.  Ummmmm

Antoni I don't have one sound argument against what you have written but
I'm a grump when I have to pay tax.  It's that time of year I know and all the tax guru's like my son are all getting excited. I'm diving for the nearest bolt hole. Got a good pub over there?

Antonio-youknow-toknow.....................................................
Isn't around this time of year that workers call it, 'tax free' day?  Yes, people rumble about taxes and me too, and I don't even work, but I do pay!  Hopefully, the taxes are well managed and go to the right places.    A good sonnet about a difficult subject and yes, I must read taxman again.  Where is he?  I shall put on my pea-suit and foil hat and investigate.
