Hi - the period in which Che became a hero to the young and naive
was also the period when Mao became a hero. It was merely fashion to be left wing at that time, nothing more - which is why the contradictions aren't important that he was a nasty piece of work, and which explains his continued iconic status, which has probably lasted longer than Mao simply because he died young and had dark good looks.

I say this all the time. Che was into violence, aggression, competition big time. I know what he did after the revolution. I don't know as much about his earlier life. It is possible that he started out as a good person who sincerely wanted to help people, if the motorcycle diaries have any truth.

Che Guevara
You're absolutely right.  It's a shame that he is admired and even idolized by so many political science professors.
