I'm a bit late catching up ... second life looks like a rejuvenation.  Hope you are well.

Yep, I got a chance at a second life here, but until I recover from not
having proper butter I can't really do much.

So does writing have four gears?

1. Spill the beans

2. Filter and tailor.

3. Lie like the devil.

4. Fugeddaboutit.

I hope your grey blue sea has lost the grey, Azur.  Your mentor friend has the right idea.  I write blogs as if I was sitting having a coffee or a beer with a friend; my problem is that once I start editing, the writing reads as if I was talking to a stranger.

This post
took me right there with you.  I'm glad you've gotten good feedback.  The heart is there and I know you'll put it in the novel.   I've enjoyed your posts over the past year.  Stay in touch.

I think your mentor has advised you very well.
It's good to think your reader(s) are friends who will get you. If what I've read is any indication, you'll make great progress if you adopt this strategy. or, to edit that a bit, way to go, Azur!
