It is much more consoling to believe than not to believe. I have done both, and I prefer the former.

It is so very true that people who have a spiritual bent (be it a traditional religion or a belief in a higher power) are healthier people. One must feed the body, the mind, and the soul.

Gome -
After writing this post, I shared some of those Sunday school stories with some friends. I'd forgotten most of them, but they soon came flooding back. Boy, did I get in trouble a lot!
It's certainly possible that this "hardwiring" is a mechanism to help us cope or survive, but I see the "hardwiring" as the discovery of the "spark" of divinity within each of us.

I completely agree. I know very little, but I believe that spirituality evolves like everything else.

sannhet - "Being asked to stand in the corner, or asked to leave . . "
ahh, the memories.
There is no doubt that a belief in God is for most people the best way of either attaining or maintaining psychological health. The hard wiring aspect though could be looked at in a number of ways with two basic questions put forth: do humans readily accept a belief in a higher power through social conditioning because of our physiological makeup? Or do humans accept a belief in a higher power because we are predisposed by our physiological make up to do so with social conditioning merely facilitating these beliefs? I tend to think the former.

The hardwiring is certainly there!
But it may have evolved. (But I don't claim to know!)
