Too many prejudices and biases built into our society, FG. You might like

a candidate, but it's a WOMAN (= ineffectual and weak), so you can't vote for her.  Or the candidate is BLACK (= less intelligent and has racial agenda).  Or the candidate is 70 years old (= could die in office or be senile).  Or the candidate is of a non-mainstream religion (= unknown religious agenda and alien thinking).

Take your pick, FG.  The stereotypes abound, feeding the prejudices and biases people have.  It's really sad, considering that four of the frontrunners for president are Hillary Clinton (a woman), Barack Obama (a black man), John McCain (an old man), and Mitt Romney (a Mormon).   Gender, racial, age, and religious steretyping and discrimination are ridiculous but they are only too alive a well.  Although in this age of political correctness you would never hear blatant bashing, you hear it indirectly from the media and from subtle campaign ads.  Its always there, if you just listen for it...

It's interesting to note the reasons why voters tend to pick a candiate.  What happened to voting for the 'best' in their opinion?

Exactly, Mademoiselle. We're a nation -- nay, a world -- of lip-servicing
hypocrites, for the most part.  Would I vote for Hillary?  Yes.  Do I believe it to be a wasted vote?  Yes.  Still, right now, unless Hagel gets into it, I would vote for Hillary.

Of course, she's also shrill and unpleasant, too.

The funny thing is that, usually, when people are asked the question in a poll, they'll always say "Oh, yeah. I'd have no qualms at all voting for a woman/black/jew/eskimo/whatever."

But, in reality, at least 25% (maybe more) would never actually do it in 10,000 years.
