Pat B

We make love and babies, which is great. We used to be fine with that. That's because we were satisfied with what we had in the past.

But now we need so much stuff! Multiple cars, multiple TV sets, home computers with internet service, cable tv, cellphones, larger homes, several bathrooms per home, huge house mortgages, huge college education loans. We work for more, more, more but our marriages and families are falling apart. More time for work to buy more stuff, less time for family, to have more love in our lives.

Man, woman - doesn't matter. If you're a parent, you've got to work.
Whether it's in the home or on the job, you've got to bring in the food, rent and health care for your kid/s. You learn quickly that not all jobs are glamorous careers, that there are boring, base level tasks that have to get done - things nobody dreamed of spending their lives on. As teenagers, we're focused on the social scene, on romance and flirting and learning about love. We're clueless about what our parents gave up to take care of us, and consequently we haven't an ounce of gratitude. We ignore the evidence all around us that lovemaking leads to babymaking and the 24-7 responsibility of another human being's needs and demands.

Afzal50, you're right

Yes, it's very interesting. The authors said that the early feminist movement wanted to protect women from having to leave the home to work. The men were supposed to take responsibility for that. Nowadays, The Market almost demands that women put their kids in daycare and get to work, whether they want to or not.

I'm a single mother with a toddler. Yes, she's stays with a babysitter all day long while I'm a work and I would prefer to take care of her myself. But we need a roof over our heads and food in the fridge. That takes money.  Money that her father does not provide.
