Freeman
very, very interesting! I had never heard of the Melungeons, and now I have! Reminds me a bit of the Metis here in Canada...

Cool stuff, Wild Bill.

Sharyn McCrumb writes about origins of mountain folks -- talks about how certain parts of the Appallachians are geologically exact to the highlands of Scotland, for example, and how immigrants just "felt that this land had good bones" when they finally found it.

Cool stuff, indeed!

I always enjoy your postst. They're like a good beer.  Calming and cool, but with a nice kick and a good buzz.  It's funny what you said about that girl - I never found that smile.  Puberty didn't go so well!!

An interesting mélange of topics interwoven into this post.   First the cows--when they come near you, flap your arms around and yell loudly, "buggedy, buggedy, boo!" and they will run from you.  Hopefully they will take the ticks with them.  I hate ticks.   I find the part about the melungeon very interesting and found myself searching out more information on the subject.   Did you know that the most common surnames of melungeons is Collins and Gibson?
