the whole idea is death and rebirth -- new life coming from the dying of the old.
the idea is that instead of the sacrifice of lambs in Jerusalem, one sacrifice sufficed. the new explanation of expiaton of sin -- releasing from the old religion's bonds.
and yet this was different than the Church has been explaining for nigh onto two millenia.

The Crucifixion does seem to make a lot of sense from an allegorical perspective. One's false "Self" must die so that one's real "self" may reunite with the Divine.
