I used to smoke, so here goes
Some of the rewards:
The deep breathing thing
Made me feel alive
Made me feel the opposite of a "goody goody" (I was always called a goody two shoes as a kid).
I liked sticking it to uptight people who choked on the smoke (but now I'm one of 'em, in fact even while I was smoking I didn't like second-hand smoke).
