I think there are two extremes here.Parents who constantly expose their kids to unsuitable partners who abuse the kids.Or parents who are too scared to have a life because of the kids.I feel depending on the kids age a parent needs to explain the relationship to the child,not ask for permission.After all the adult needs from another adult companionship a kid cannot give.The kid is not going to be around forever and once they fall in love the parents are history.Kids need to understand this but parents have a responsibility to keep their kids safe.
