This is such a debate. In my opinion spanking takes away the child's ability to think through a consequence. It's such an immediate reaction to a wrongdoing that they are only obeying to keep from being hurt. No matter how it's done, it hurts. I tried the spanking thing on both my children and after going through school for Social Work and learning about choices I realized that that is what promotes self esteem and takes the battle out of day to day disagreements and defiance. You do this, this happens. Not a threat of violence. Also I noticed it just made them mad.
