Well written post.
However, if Democrats voted to outright cut off funding for the war, they would face huge political backfire (worse than they now face from the right-wing). Conservative pundits would scream "Democrats don't support the troops". Which they do anyway, but perhaps more people would believe them.
Instead Democrats are using subtler methods of bringing the war -- more slowly -- to an end. The hard left wants swift withdrawal (a position becoming more popular as the occupation goes on...and on...and on...). I know of few Democrats who would refuse to continue funding the war if doing so were essential to national security. Their position, one I consider correct, is that the war is what has jeopardized our security, and that stopping it would enable us to begin picking up the pieces.

House Democrats got it wrong
This is a big dilemma. Don't set timetables and we stay there forever. Set timetables and we may leave at an inauspicious time. There is no clear solution. Yet we must leave, we should leave. Who then has got it right?

Does anyone think for themselves anymore? Do they care what happens if they get their way? This is terrible.
