Thanks OTA
It's not meant to be too depressing or critical of anyone. Let's just be glad we've got a vote - that's the main weapon against dictators.

That is very true, Rithwik.
We also create our own information, which is not always true.

Hi Mneme - I suppose compulsory voting would be a change for the better,
but for reasons alluded to in my previous comment, it wouldn't change that much in terms of who gets elected, but it would legitimise whoever won more. It would not, though, mean that the majority actually did want that person or party in power, any more than a system does where only a small percentage bother to vote.

Hi troosha. Yes, I see the dilemma. I don't always vote either.
This is because my vote would change nothing, unless i was living in an area where you could not predict the winner. Then i would be motivated to vote. The poem was really 'inspired' by looking at the news and seeing articles about Mugabe and then Castro, and I just meant to demonstrate how the democratic voting system, even with its weaknesses we are all aware of, ensures that in most western countries we do not get old men hanging on to power. Bush will go and Blait will go, no matter what they would want to do. It's well known that Blair, in particular, would like to carry on, but his fellow party members in Parliament feel he has become an electoral liability and are refusing to support his continued leadership. So although British voters do not directly get to elect Blair or whoever takes over, as Prime Minister, they do have an indirect say, and this results in an inability for a PM to remain longer than the voters want him or her to.

Tonyzonit
I wonder how long it will be before voting in the US and UK is made compulsory like it is in Australia? Great work.

Tony
Sometimes I think our "voice" is more like a whisper lost in the winds of hidden agenda.  Hence, I have become somewhat apathetic when it comes to politics although it's the collective voice that can ultimately effect change.  I bet there are a lot of "me's" out there though and that's unfortunate.
