Sems to me the biggest problem with the NHS is the "N"
It makes it the plaything of politicians of the bureaucracy, those who here at stateside think that every job is best done by somebody with an MBA.  It is the same tomfoolery that W. S. Gilbert lampooned with such classics as "When I was a Lad" and "The Major General's Song".

Perhaps some revised lyrics, like the following, are in order:

Stick close to your desks
And never see a patient
And you all may be doctors in the NHS!

or

My medical knowledge, though  I'm rather good at oratory,
Is rather firmly planted in the eighteenth century
But still in matters financial and organizational
I am the very model of a physician specifical
