It is helpful to remember...
that back in 1972, depression was still stigmatized as a mental illness (although there were some effective treatments at the time). The press was just starting to "open up" about the health histories of candidates and potential candidates; it would have been difficult for JFK or FDR - both of whom had complicated medical histories largely hidden from the general public - to get elected nowadays due to concerns on the part of the electorate as to whether they'd survive even one term.
