I know how much you love the earth and the dirt... flowers and trees.
Remember when you first when to Iraq?  I ran all around downtown San Diego trying to find a tree that I could reach these beautiful purple blossoms that bloomed only in early spring. March. Took me forever, but I filled a care package with them and those dark pink (fuchsia really) dollar bill size flower pedals.  But, remember that guy?  From the 101st Airborne that walked along with me downtown and offered to give me a ride on his motorcycle?  Then I posted about it, and I was anxious, waiting to hear if you had arrived in Baghdad okay.  In that post, in the comments, you left your address cryptically so I could sent them all off.  I think of that time when I see those flowers.  It was March 10th.  That week anyway.  Wow.  Yesterday I was walking around my neighborhood, to get coffee and write and people watch.  I started a practice from when you were in Baghdad... I would pick pink flowers... any flowers that would hold color (yellow doesn't, pink and purple do...) and put them in my journal to press to send you.  I still do it.  Funny.  So, my journal is filled with pink and purple flowers, the one I just bought in January.  And that was... three years ago?  Damn.  I think of you, too.  Funny how life brings little new routines and how something nice can come out of something dark.  Hey, what's up with the Navy?  Still waiting?  I hope that works out for you.  You know I just really want you to come to Sandog so we can have beers and make up silly songs. :)

FreeManWalking
Tennessee holds a special place in my heart because my family came from there.   Their land will remain pretty much always the same because they sold it to the State to become a part of Natchez Trace State Park.  It is wonderful to be able to make trips there, to see the work of the land reclaimation to rid it of the kudzu, to see the little old-time church that my ancesters helped to establish still there, still going strong.

That is bittersweet.  At least you're seeing it now, before the stick houses and the mortgage.  Sounds like a much better day than sitting at a desk under fluoresent lighting, starting the day by crying for 45 minutes!
