Hi -
the theory is good and I agree that the brain can recognise words despite the order of the letters but I am very anal when it comes to spelling and always try to get it right. I think it's important because writing tends to be a permanent record and language changes. The lingo used 100 years from now will no doubt be very different and mis-spelling now could render it unreadable at a future date. Also, spare a thought for those that aren't familiar with the language. I'll bet the experiment would work out very differently when tried in something other than your mother tongue.

Since we all grow up with our own mental dictionary, and meanings
differ from one family group to another, the classroom conventions of writing, spelling, punctuation, etc., are necessary so that we may all be "on the same page." Writers need to use the expected and conventional in order to connect to editors and publishers.

YPunday,
of course, correct spelling is important! It not only reflects one's ability to spell but also one's ability to master the language.

YP-
Legitimate points - I noticed you got the "e" on the end of my name. I thank you most sincerely! It is often misspelled. Howie Mandell is on Jay Leno right now and to illustrate how kids get words mixed up, they just buried a goldfish and at the mini-funeral, his little boy wrote, "May she rest in piss."

Ooops. CBS ran it!
