Deepananda -
Good and evil are in the eye of the beholder - hence Krishna's remarks to Arjuna.

Deepananda, I agree with your main observations
Sometimes, often in fact, to do good is to cause oneself pain. It tends to be mental pain sometimes and that should be the easiest to fight against, by adopting a moral approach, e.g. by not always exacting revenge against people who have wronged us. If we see it in the right manner, we can take pride in that approach and see it as mental strength rather than weakness.

What a marvellous anecdote of robbing oneself of one's perceptions, and to begin the journey from exactly the point where one stands at present. There is no question of becoming like, by doing this and that, in purificatory process, and then seek the Supreme. This teaches us that one can begin just this moment.
I took out a print and read 'Ramakrishna' to my uncle. He is otherwise reticent but he was moved at the beauty of the teachings and sends you his blessings. There is an English version of Kathamrita which I had - a very thick one - but unfortunately. I lost the book about two years ago in a truck accident carrying our household goods to Jaipur from Udaipur upon my transfer.

You have put it very aptly. Good and bad are determined by social pressures and requirements rather than by an innate and universal ethos.

Very interesting...
...one would think paradoxical, but there is truth to this. This is why it's so important not to be judgemental of others. Often, "good" and "bad" are defined not by the real damage the "sin" causes, but defined by the perceptions of those around us. A mob mentality can set in. Things become offensive simply because someone thinks they should be offensive (but maybe aren't personally offended). Now I'm almost edging into "which came first, the chicken or the egg" territory. Not sure if I'm making sense.
