These two factors are a perfect analysis as a cause for the tremendous conservatism of human nature. The path of
Satsangha as enumerated by Adi Shankarchrya, "
Satsangatwe Nissangatwam, Nissangatwe Nirmohhatwam, Nirmohhatwe Nischlatatwam, Nischalatatwe Jivan muktih", to attain to liberation is so true sequentially.

Thanks for the insightful comment. J. Krishnamurthy and other Theosophists have said
"The urge behind evolution, and the objective which this urge is impelling us towards, is simply the divine hunger in the Universe to grow greater, to advance, to unfold . . . It is innate in the Universe". This desire has to be combined with the receptivity for the ensuing change.

Inertia in vedic philosophy is explained by an attribute or
Guna, known as
Tamas. This could be laziness or ignorance or as you put it 'not bothering to act'. As in physics, inertia has to be overcome to have movement so also in spirituality one has to remove
Tamas.

Deepananda, a thoughful, intelligent post. I think it was J. Krishnamurti
who talked of "divine discontent" being a good thing. Being dissatisfied or frustrated with the way things are is a powerful fuel to initiate positive change or growth. Something I have personally learned is that Boredom can be something valuable to be cultivated rather than resisted or drowned out with activity. When Boredom gathers enough, something remarkable will happen.

Interesting stuff. I wish I could overcome inertia.
I don't know if it's caused by fear of change - I don' think so, I actually want to do things but just can't be bothered most of the time!
