I don't think you should take a "leave of absence" from your academic endeavors. Just move forward and finish what you must finish.

As I was saying to tonyzonit, I think it's sad that it's only taken negatively. Thanks for visiting.

The surprising thing is, I've never (in colloquial use) heard anything other than the "piece of work" as derogatory term. Nasty piece of work is probably more common in Britain I think. It's a pity both mean the same, and that the rest of the quote is forgotten.
- thanks for the support, too - sometimes it can be quite a feat just to read the poetry..! The research is the easy part - the writing takes longer.

That's a nice way of putting it. - you have to try to see the good where you can.. harder at some times than at others but worth trying.

Thank you for your thoughts, and, likewise.. I'll be over to read soon! I sometimes think of Arachne in connection with the first quote - and I must say I can also think of both ways to use the Shakespeare LOL.

Hi bloggers
I have to apologise for my tardiness, just a virus that's making me very tired. I'll be back to reading and commenting again soon - meanwhile I hope everyone is well.

Said with sarcasm, as most people do, "piece of work" would be deragatory.
But I can see it being complimentary when used with the right tone.

Hi Mneme. I suppose if a 'piece of work' is complimentary, then
'nasty piece of work' is like saying a shoddy, badly-made example of mankind! Interesting window on what you've been up to. I had no idea. Hope all goes well with this project. It's certainly not easy researching and writing a factual book.

Thinking too much feels like wearing pyjamas to work, neither form nor
function suited to present task or mood. It always happens when I can least afford to indulge.

I prefer Shakespeare’s rendition of “piece of work” and if you think about if it makes perfect sense that it should be a complimentary term. It’s like referring to someone as a masterpiece, the fruits of labour, etc.

I love your thinking here. The quotes you chose for this post are wonderful. I was not familiar with the first but I surely can relate. And, I have used the Shakespeare selection in both ways. LOL I love it when you post.

You should never start thinking. It's dangerous. I shall look out Dorothy
Porter at some point. Am going to note her down in my Moleskine.
