That tugged at heartstrings! Thank you for sharing.
I remember at that age, that day feeling uncomfortable because there were children left out and feeling bad. Good for your mother to include everyone and for you as an 8 yr. old boy to notice Jenny. We were taught to always treat everyone fairly and to stick up for those less fortunate. We had Sheryl's too, all classrooms do. It was interesting to see how they turned out though; for the most part things seemed to plateau to level playing ground as the years went by. Especially around junior year when the farm boys came back from summer vacation!

well you were eight and you didn't have the perspective you do now, so you can't really fault yourself for not doing it differently.

Personally, I think any parent who wouldn't insist that their child give everyone a valentine deserves 30 lashes with a wet noodle. It's shameful, really.

this brought back so many memories!!! I had the same valentine dramas as a child.. I could go on and on about those ..
