Wow!  What an interesting topic!  I never knew such a thing as a "sin-eater" existed, but it makes perfect sense.  I also find it intriguing that the "funeral cake" might have roots to sin-eaters.

Don't know if I'd like to hang out with a person who made such a living, but I guess there's worse things a person could be.  *grin*

When one asks my father-in-law how he's doing, he always says (with a saucy wink), "Very well thank you! Didn't you know? Life always treats bad people well!"

So how are you doing?

Yep. Except for a few specific village names and other ficitonal literature. OH, and after writing this entry, I found a book that actually instructs the reader how to become a Sin-eater, but when I read the description it gave me the heebie-jeebies. I closed the window immediately.

Hi Solowriter
I don't believe that anyone can truly pardon your sins, except for yourself, actually. Of course, the Karma idea of "what goes around comes around" seems to do pretty well, too. Still, the notion of someone else taking care of your sins for you is quite attractive! Human nature is very lazy.

Interesting to say the least. I have a notion no sin-eater would
want the job with such as me. It'd take a truck load of bread me thinks.

Yeah, some people used to use a goat for the same purpose ; scapegoat ( Have you ever seen Holman Hunt's picture The Scapegoat? )

I've just instructed my trusty butler, Google, to find information and the clever chap's come up with pages.

Too busy to read 'em right now.

be well, colleen

I've never heard of them, but it sounds fascinating. Was that basically all the information you could find about them? Personally, I'm not sure you could pay me enough to do that job, lol.

Other than being brain washed into believing that sort of thing, as in the Christian church, they say Jesus took on the sins of the world and that at the last supper, he said the bread was his body and the wine was his blood ~ I do not believe that I should arrive at such a conclusion when conscious in my self of my own responsibilities.  Now that I break my self free from the fear system of indoctrination, I would not ask Jesus or any one else to take on the sins of an other.
