Last year the murder and violent crime rates spiked in Memphis. Not just the "typical" gang violence and botched robberies, but there were many cases of brazen murders committed in broad daylight in neighborhoods where this type of thing isn't supposed to happen (meaning any neighborhood outside of "the hood"). Though no one with any official capacity said it out loud, there were whispers about the cause. Those who escaped Katrina. The new year started with a bang (no pun intended), but it's still too early to tell if we're off to a record-breaking pace.

I didn't watch every episode of Homicide, but I liked the show, especially when Pemberton got a suspect in the box. The way he could get a confession was as thrilling as it was frightening. Sometimes I wondered if they got the right guy. I rarely watch The Wire, but I also enjoy that show. It treats the idea of the drug trade the way it really is, as organized crime, not simply gangbangers.

I haven't seen any statistics (and honestly, I haven't looked), but the long rap sheets of eventual murder victims sounds possible. Those who live by the sword and all that.
