Writing scares people...
and they often use a thesaurus to replace their first choice word with a more intelligent-sounding one. This ruins the flow of the writing. Grammar scares the crap out of everyone - I think it's down to the way it's taught in schools. I came away from high school with a better understanding of German grammar than English.

JOY, we were talking about this at work yesterday...our staff is very
articulate in speaking but when it comes to writing, even my boss will often say, "anyone want to write a letter for me?"..
