My Mom and Grandma used to tell stories of Lachine (and Verdun) that were just pitiful. I'm glad I didn't live in those days but sometimes I'm not sure we've made a huge amount of progress.

depending on what you believe, "God" or the "Creator" could take any number of descriptions. I find it sad that a parent couldn't take the time to show some tolerance to others (and help build it in her child) by saying "we believe in God but some other religions have a different form of worship, let's talk about what some of these are".
