Sorry to hear about the depression....

Mine began when I was about 12. It's been an eclectic life to say the least...LOL! If you ever wanna discuss anything, email me.

I know enough on the subject of depression to write two books. You're right though. Even on our bad days, we still maintain the ability to be good parents.

Thanks for all of the great comments!
It's nice to see that I am not the only one that thinks the term mentally stable is relative and sometimes simply not applicable to any one situation.

Does putting the frozen salmon patties away in the cupboard

instead of in the freezer count as a mentally unstable moment?

I understand about depression-- that you are dealing with it ought to help you in a custody dispute.  When regarded as primarily a brain-chemistry problem that is readily treatable, then it becomes a mark of rationality that you have made the moves to stabilize yourself.

In the eyes of society, getting professional help is often worse than going untreated. This is a reflection of society's basic fear and misunderstanding of anything involving mental health. Too many bad movies and TV shows of people with split personalities and serial killers and raving lunatics have further twisted our already skewered perceptions of the field and thrown gasoline on the fires of superstition. As time goes by, as we learn more about the brain and how it works and such, these attitudes will eventually fall by the wayside, but don't hold your breath while you wait.

rachel--
I daresay that no one on this planet has it "all together, all the time." We have mentally stable moments (and days or weeks if we are lucky), and in-between are the challenging times. I understand why people try to hide their depression though--it (for the most part) is just not understood by those who have not experienced it.
