The Gloves Should Be Off Now!
The time has come to wipe out as many insurgents as necessary to gring the peace. The politics of trying to blend one country out of three warring factions has absolutely failed. Remember, with every war, there is a political goal. The goal must now change and more direct and absolute force should be used to get this situation under control.

I think that is a very good description of what has and is going on scoop!
I really do think our generals should have led the fight much better. Instead of retiring and then speaking out they should have done so before and been forceful enough to resign when the powers-that-be tried to make them so otherwide. Bush and company would have been forced to do what they are doing now. Our soldiers need to be turned loose to do their job if they are going to be put in harms way.

The problem for the last 3 3/4 years is that Bush and Rumsfeld
wanted to stay the course, the "war" was over in the first month. It has changed course many times. We went from fightiing the Iraq army, to terrorists and now it is sectarian violence and the troops don't know who is who.

Ariel,

You are right on. I can remember before it all started many more body bags were thought to be needed. Our death toll is lighter than most people thought. I am not sure about the casualties though. They are a bit high. They would probably have been much lower in an all-our war. It's just one big mess. And it got that way because we did not use the things we have that give us an advantage to our benefit. We'll see how our government handles it now.

The Iraq war is a classic case of wiling the ends, but balking at the means.

One can argue ad infinitum the relative merits of a swift, brutal, all-out war, and a pussyfooting, timid war like this one.

What my long study of history has taught me is that the former is almost always more effective, and ultimately more merciful, in that casualties tend to be lighter.

The miracle is that, with their half-hard tactics, the Coalitian forces haven't sustained a far higher casualty rate.
