When I was a boy in the south we concentrated on what we considered the three major sports:  baseball, basketball, and football.  Each held precedence in its own season without the overlap of seasons that you have today.  Fewer teams, shorter schedules and no playoffs, or limited playoffs prevailed.  Basketball was the most popular sport in my crowd because you didn't have to have as many players for a game to be played.  It was also the one sport that you could practice extensively by yourself.  Many a youngster grew up shooting hoops for hours on end by himself until someone showed up and you could play one-on-one or two-on-two.  Three or fewer players on a side was still a pretty good game.  Not so for the other sports.

I've never been a basketball fan, and way back when, as soon as the family gatherings were over, so was the football season.

I remember many of those Packers-Lions games quite fondly.  Both teams seem to have fallen on hard times.  I'm a Tigers fan going all the way back to the days of Al Kaline, Harvey Kuehn, Paw Paw Maxwell, and my favorite pitcher, the old Yankee Killer himself, Frank Lary.  I guess my fondness for basketball derives from playing so much in my younger days.  It didn't take as many guys to get a basketball game going as it did for baseball or football.  I was a pretty fair athlete back then.  I dreamed of walking on at UNCCH, but I wasn't that good.  It's great to dredge up all those old memories, especially this time of year.

I am a Jet and Giant fan have been for years
I have loved the Jets when they were the NY Titans back in the 60's, sorry can't stand basketball, love the Yankees. As far as the Detroit Lions I will always remember the Thanksgiving games between the Packers and the Lions, nothing better.
