Linda Hamilton, who played Catherine Chandler, did indeed have serious personal problems. Both her marriages - I forget the name of her first husband, but her second marriage was to James Cameron - failed. In fact, her marriage to Cameron broke up soon after he won the Oscar for Titanic. And what turned out to be the impending failure of her first marriage is widely credited for being the reason she quit the series after filming the first episode of the third season. She doesn't do much work, but she is most famous for her work in the first two Terminator films (I'd heard a third one was in the works) and for Beauty and the Beast. I didn't know she struggled with mental-health issues, too.

I liked the series, too...
The character of the beast was drawn as being more human than most of us, with physically ugly characteristics. I liked the whole ensemble - the fantasy aspects, the magical realism. The actress, I saw in later interviews, had mental health issues, depression and bi-polar deals, but I still see her in films once in a while. I admire the courage of someone who deals with serious health issues in addition to all the ordinary crap life throws at us. Thanks for the reminiscence. :)
